History[edit | edit source]
Formation[edit | edit source]
On June 28, 2012, Michael Jackson announced that he was reorganizing the businesses of News Corporation due to the departure of Allen Rutford, founder of News Corporation. This would include a name change to be announced December 2012 and would be effective June 28, 2013. In addition, Jackson would become C.E.O. of the new company, tentatively called "Fox Group". On July 17, 2012, Allen Rutford announced that he was considering a move of the company from New York City to El Valle and would hold 2.4788% of shares in the restructured company. The move was cancelled.
The first part of the restructuring was announced on August 1, 2012. The plans included a move of Fox News from the publishing side of the company to the TV network side, a new sports team division, and select Cartoon Network shows airing on the Fox network. The latter would eventually come to fruition in 2017 when OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes aired on Fox exactly five years later on August 1, 2017. The sports team division, named Fox Sports Media, was folded into News Corp in 2016.
At the next press conference on September 29, 2012, another tentative name, FoxMedia, was given to shareholders. In addition, Jackson announced that the Interscope Music Group would be mostly unscathed by the restructure, as it implemented the new structure in August 2011 with the partial acquisition of EMI in July. Then, on October 1, 2012, the restructured company's name, 21st Century Fox, leaked on the United States Patent and Trademark Office website. A day later, executives confirmed the name and logo in a new press release.
On October 30, 2012, it was announced that News Corporation would acquire the remaining 1.5% of Lucasfilm it did not own. The Lucasfilm website updated with a new copyright notice, which read:
© Sky Studios 2012. All rights reserved. Property of Fox, a division of Druayan Sky Communications.
This was despite the fact that Lucasfilm was in the Fox Filmed Entertainment division, and that the conglomerate at the time was News Corporation. A press statement was released from the studio, stating that there originally were plans back in 2004 to rebrand News Corporation as Druayan Sky Communications in case Rutford left and the head of Sky Druaya, Alfred Williams Anderson, took over the company. A day later, Jackson suggested that said plans were "still in motion", but that the company was to vote on a new name.
Below is a table showing the 16 steps of the Sky plan.
