Sonic the Hedgehog is a computer-animated adventure film based on the video game franchise of the same name by Sega. The film was directed by Rob Persichetti, Naoto Ohshima (in his feature directorial debut), and Ian Jones-Quartey (in his feature directorial debut; creator of OK K.O.!). It was written by Alex Hirsch, from a story by Ian Flynn. It stars Ryan Drummond as the voice of the title character and Mike Pollock as the voice of Sonic's nemesis Doctor Robotnik, alongside Michael Jackson (as Tails) and Dan Green (as Knuckles). In the film, Dr. Robotnik unleashes the energy of the Chaos Emeralds to build up his own power, and the heroes have to stop him. This film is the start of the Sonic Cinematic Universe, which will be followed up by Sonic Dimensions and a film based on OK K.O.!, entitled OK K.O.! Let's Fight to the End.
In 1992, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer acquired the film rights to the Sonic franchise, and by 1994 had an adaptation in development. However, in 1996, News Corporation, owners of 20th Century Fox, acquired the 25% of Sega they did not own. As a result, Fox got the films rights to Sonic. In 1997, an adaptation was underway at 20th Century Fox Animation, but was cancelled for Titan A.E. in 1998. In 2004, another attempt was made, but was cancelled by 2008 due to budget concerns. In 2014, it was announced that another adaptation would be created, this time with resources pulled from other Fox projects for the budget. The film entered production on August 9, 2017. The major staff and cast were announced on January 11, 2018.
