History[edit | edit source]

Beginnings: 1986-1987[edit | edit source]

In 1983, CBS Corporation shut down its Viacom Syndication Enterprises division due to the FCC allowing networks to create their own syndication divisions. CBS sold the Viacom name to a private investment group named Television City Investments Inc, which was itself sold to United Artists. UA was owned-and-operated by Tracinda Corporation, which belonged to businessman Kirk Kerkorian. Kirk later sold off UA, and as a result Television City, to a new investment group. The group was named Viacom Acquisition L.P., with the limited partners being American pop star Michael Jackson and British businessman Alan Sugar. Sugar immediately sold Viacom to Jackson as soon as United Artists was sold off from Tracinda.

On January 16, 1986, the deal was complete. Alan Sugar immediately sold his stake in the company to Jackson. Jackson stated that he was "forever grateful to own such a company" and that "he would put the company to good use." On January 30, 1986, Jackson founded a new company under the Viacom name: Viacom Enterprises Ltd. This company is the modern Viacom, albeit under a different legal name. In addition, he owned United Artists. Unitec Artists added the a Michael Jackson company byline onto both its print and on-screen logo.

Both CBS and Thorn EMI eyed acquiring this new company, but Jackson shut both deals down.
