Invincible is the seventh studio album released by American singer-songwriter Michael Jackson under Epic Records, a division of Columbia Music Entertainment, which is a division of Optimum Enterprises. It is his eleventh studio album overall. Invincible was Michael Jackson's first album of the 2000s, 21st century, and the third millennium.

Background[edit | edit source]

After 1997's Blood On The Dance Floor, Michael Jackson and his team were looking for greater success due to the generally-lacking sales from the album when first released (Blood On The Dance Floor sold 500,000 copies while HIStory sold 1,000,000 copies in the first month, according to the Record Sales Association of America's comparison of Michael Jackson album sales in 1997), with the team citing lack of advertising and singles. Jackson sought to fix these issues with his next record, with a preliminary title of Phoenix (a name that would end up being used for a 2018 album of the same name). It would release in 1999, with eight singles (a preliminary version of "You Rock My World", "Hold On", "The Heavens", "She Found Me", "11PM", "She's Only Fifteen", "Back2Back", and the lead single "Shut Up and Dance"). Phoenix, however, was ultimately scrapped in December of 1997, but "You Rock My World" was approved to be move to the next project, codenamed "The M Album".
